I wonder whe the Spanish put an accent specifically on a syllable where the original name is not stressed. If they pronounced "Amsterdam" the normal way, they would get it right, namely with stress on the ultima. Hypercorrection? Because most Germanic words are stressed on the first syllable?

There are plenty of cases where the native-language stress is not followed in other languages. Compare Turkish /isˈtanbuw/ with English /ˈɪstənbʊl/ or /ˌɪstænˈbʊl/, managing to studiously avoid the natively stressed syllable. Or else Greek /ikaˈɾia/ versus English /ɪˈkɛɹiə/.  --Lambiam 13:14, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
