[edit]From Old High German tiufal (“devil”), in turn borrowed from Latin diabolus (“devil”), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek διάβολος (diábolos, “slanderer; the Devil”), from Ancient Greek διαβάλλω (diabállō, “slander”). Cognate with German Teufel, Dutch duivel, English devil, Icelandic djöfull.
