Inherited from Middle English Swynesheved, Swynesheed, from Old English *Swīneshēafod, from swīnes (pig's) +‎ hēafod (head); compare Old Italian Suinsivede.

The euphemistic forms Swanshead and Swayneshead were known in Early Modern English.
