[edit]From Sundhnúkagíga (indefinite plural genitive of Sundhnúkagígur, name of the southern side of the massif, literally “craters [gíga, genitive plural of gígur] of mountainpeaks [hnúka, archaic spelling of the genitive plural of hnjúkur] of (alley, narrow path, channel) [sund]”) + röðin, definite nominative of röð (“row”), literally “the row of craters of (the mountainpeak in the alley)”.
