[edit]From a merger of two words: 1.) Middle Low German strippe (“strip, cord”), cognate with Dutch strip, English strip, and related with German Streifen, and 2.) Middle High German struppe, strüppe, northern variant of strupfe, strüpfe (“leather loop”), borrowed from Latin struppus (“strap, band”), cognate with Dutch strop.
