Etymology

From Stadt (town, city) +‎ Bild (image), perhaps influenced by Weichbild (city area), in which the component -bild is, however, not immediately equivalent to German Bild.

  1. the appearance of a town or city; townscape, cityscape, but referring more to its appearance as one walks through it, rather than the skyline
