[edit]First attested with certainty as de sprundele in 1282. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymology include a compound of Old Dutch *sprund (“lively, vibrant”) and lo (“light forest”) or a derivation from a term cognate to Old English sprindil (“glue used to trap birds, bird trap”).
