Etymology

First attested as Spinolaberg in 1869. Derived from Spanish Spinola (a surname) and berg (hill, elevated place). Named after Ambrogio Spinola (1569-1630), a military commander employed by the Spanish Empire who led a failed attack on Bergen op Zoom in 1622.
