[edit]- (Drenthe) First attested as de Spykerboor in 1792. Derived from spijkerboor (“brace”). The toponym probably references a curved stream or road. Compare Zwingelspaan. See also Dutch Low Saxon Spiekerboor.
- (Noord-Holland) First attested as Spykerboors gat in 1575. Derived from spijkerboor (“brace”). Originally a hydronym referring to a watercourse that was shaped roughly like a brace.
