Etymology

First attested as spangghe in 1320. Etymology unknown. Potentially derived from a term cognate to Old English spann (strip of land), from Middle Dutch spange (elongated strip of land) or from an ancient hydronym. The element gea (village, village area) is a later addition that developed under influence from neighbouring toponyms. Compare Spanbroek, Spang, Spangen and Spannum.
