Spëndel
Appearance
Luxembourgish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German spinnel, from Old High German spinnila, from Proto-West Germanic *spinnilu. The -d- was inserted as a linking sound between the two sonorants, as also in cognate German Spindel, English spindle. The vocalic difference between Spëndel and the verb spannen (“to spin”) is due to the influence of following -i- in Old High German spinnila.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
