First attested as slendebroeck in 1425. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch slende (low-lying area, pool, kolk lake) and broek (marsh, marshland). Compare for the first element Old English slind (slope, incline) and Old Saxon slund (gullet, maw, abyss).
