Etymology

[edit]

Named after Saint Nicholas. According to a local etymology, the settlement was once owned by one Nicolaas van der Biest (1808-1873), whose subordinates were forced to address him as shon (master) Nicolaas. The toponym was then reinterpreted to the name of Saint Nicholas.
