Borrowed from Arabic شَحَّاتَة (šaḥḥāta), from شَحَّات (šaḥḥāt, beggar). In the Dictionary of American Family Names, the surname is given as a variant of Shehadeh, which is apparently from a different root. This surname is predominantly found in Egypt.
