Borrowed from Cherokee ᏎᏉᏯ (sequoya), earlier ᏍᏏᏉᏯ (ssiquoya); usually held to derive from ᏏᏆ ᎠᏯᎠ (siqua ayaa, literally a beast (is) inside).
