[edit]Expanded from earlier Schwieger (“mother-in-law”), from Old High German swigar, from Proto-Germanic *swegrō, from Proto-Indo-European *sweḱruh₂- (“woman's mother-in-law”) (compare *swéḱuros (“woman's father-in-law”)). By surface analysis, schwieger- + Mutter.
