Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Possibly a clipping of Schotteldook, compound of Schottel (“bowl, platter”) + Dook (“cloth”). Alternatively a clipping of Schorteldook (compare West Frisian skerteldoek, skeldoek), compound of Schortel (from Schort + -el (diminutive suffix), with the first element coming from Proto-West Germanic *skurtijā) + Dook.[1][2]
