German
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- Schmunzette (nonstandard, but widely attested)
Etymology
[edit]20th century, from now archaic Schmonzes (“idle talk”) + -ette (after Operette or the like). The first component is from Yiddish שמאָנצעס (shmontses), itself likely from Hebrew שְׁמוּעוֹת (šəmūʿōṯ, “rumours”). The alternative form with u probably through (etymologically unfounded) association with schmunzeln (“to smile slightly, smirk”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]Schmonzette f (genitive Schmonzette, plural Schmonzetten)
- (colloquial, derogatory) a cheesy, kitschy film, play or book
- 2023 November 25, Doris Akrap, “Sisi für Sisi-Muffel”, in Die Tageszeitung: taz[1], →ISSN:
- Einer der Gründe für die aktuelle Sisi-Renaissance dürfte sicher sein, dass das Bild der schönen, modernen und tragischen österreichischen Kaiserin jahrzehntelang von den Schmonzetten mit Romy Schneider geprägt war.
