[edit]Attested as Schapenbout in 1840. Compound of the plural form of schaap (“sheep”) and dialectal bout (“remaining section of a collapsed or destroyed levee”). Named for the fact that the inhabitants of the settlement took their sheep to pasture on the remains of the levee.
