[edit]- (Gelderland) First attested as Schans Gelderoort in 1830-1855. Derived from schans (“sconce”). Named after the former Schans Gelderoort fortress.
- (Limburg) First attested as Schantz in 1803-1820. Derived from schans (“sconce”), here referring to a fortified position built by local farmers. See also Limburgish Sjans.
- (Altena) Derived from schans (“sconce”).
