[edit]First attested as scalkessum in 1319. Derived from a compound of Old Frisian scalk (“servant, lackey”) or Scalk (a personal name) and hēm (“home, settlement”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
