[edit]16th century, at first in the more general sense of “stage, podium”, from Dutch schavot, from Middle Dutch scavot, scafaut, from Old French eschafaud, variant of chafaud, from Vulgar Latin *catafalicum, probably derived from Latin fala. Doublet of Katafalk.
