From Middle High German schæfer, schæfære, from Old High German scāfāri. Cognate with German Schäfer. By surface analysis, Schof +‎ -er. Schéifer preserves the inherited outcome of Middle High German -æ-. Compare Scheefchen (little sheep) with analogical umlaut after the primary noun.
