Documented in 934 as Sindilanes.[1] From Suevic or Gothic, from a genitive form of the Germanic personal name *Sinþilô or *Swinþilô. From *sinþaz (journey) or *swinþaz (strong) and the diminutive personal suffix *-ilô derived from *-ilaz.[2]
