Coined by Eduard Suess in 1909, in Das Antlitz der Erde, as a blend of translingual Si (silicon) +‎ Al (aluminum).

This division differs from the classification which has been proposed by distinguished American petrographers, in the separation of the metallic barysphere (Nife).
