Etymology

[edit]

From sab-atan (meeting place), referring to the meeting of the Chico river and the Baduyam river.

Another source is the legend Saba nan Bangan (Bangan's Banana), wherein years ago, there was a couple named Bangatan and Bogan with their daughter Bangan. While Bangan was playing on their garden full of bananas, a stranger arrived, pointed to the surroundings, and asked what the name of the village is. Bangan thought that the stranger was asking for the name of the fruit, and so she responded "saba". The stranger asked again and Bangan thought that the stranger was asking for her name, so she replied Bangan. The stranger had a hard time pronouncing the two words and just said "Sabangan", to which Bangan just nodded. From then on, the place was called Sabangan.
