Etymology

[edit]

From Low German Reling, Regeling, derived from Middle Low German rēgel, from Old Saxon *rigil, probably from Latin regula, though this sometimes doubted. Cognate with German Riegel, Dutch richel, and possibly English rail. The form Reling was reinforced and standardised under the influence of English railing.
