[edit]First attested as richeim in 822-825. Borrowed from West Frisian Reitsum, in turn derived from a compound of a variant of Old Frisian Reitse (a personal name) or Proto-Germanic *rîkja- (“powerful, mighty”) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
