Etymology

[edit]

From Middle High German regel, from Old High German regula, from Latin regula. Probably not a direct borrowing from German Regel, but influenced by it due to the frequent use in more learned contexts and especially in school; therefore the regular development into *Reel (*Reeël, *Réiel) was hindered.
