Meaning of víkingr?

@PUC Are you familiar how well established is the interpretation of Old Norse víkingr as bay's dweller? This interpretation is founded on the presumed relation to Old Norse vík (“bay, inlet”) (akin to archaic English wick (“dwelling”)), but it may be misleading. A less likely, but still possible alternative is an origin from Proto-Indo-European *weyk- (“to conquer, to overcome”), probably from an earlier *wīhingaz, akin to Proto-Germanic *wiganą (“to battle”) and further to Latin victor. I found this hypothesis mentioned in some forum but I don't have time to research where it comes from. In any case, do you think it is OK to keep the traditional translation or it is better to leave the Norse/Proto-Germanic terms untranslated? Безименен (talk) 14:05, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
