NL "sof", YI "sof", HE "sōf"

[edit]

According to https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/sof, also:

  • HE (Hebrew) "sōf" = EN end, closure
  • YI (Yiddish) "sof" = EN end, disappointing result, adversity

are related. Any motivated objections against adding them?Redav (talk) 17:27, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Redav: They are related but not descendants. The Aramaic word of this form derives from the descendant by transfixation, and the Hebrew and Arabic سَوْفَ (sawfa) are borrowed from this Aramaic innovation. Look further from the Arabic entry, where you come to the Aramaic and Hebrew entries, each with satisfying references. Fay Freak (talk) 17:48, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
