"Shoes"
[edit]@Kwékwlos I don't know if the word for "shoes" can be safely reconstructed for proto-Ryukyuan, let alone proto-Japonic (although the term is attested in OJ). Although Macro-Yaeyama dialects show native like developments with the meaning "straw sandals" (but Taketomi putsu tone class BC is unexpected), various dialects (along with a skewed distribution) imply a loanword scenario: Yamatohama kˀutsu (neologism) (Osada and Suyama 1977-1980), Kametsu kù̥tɕû, Wadomari kùtsû, China kùtsú (Hirayama 1986:254), Irabu-Nakachi kʊ̥tsɿ (Tomihama 2013:236), Tarama-Nakasuji kutsɿ (tone class C) (Tokuyama and Celik 2020:167).
Pinging also @Eirikr, 荒巻モロゾフ, Mellohi! for further input. Chuterix (talk) 05:17, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
- If a term attested in OJ is also found in Southern Ryukyuan showing native-like developments, then this is a strong argument for positing a PR (and hence PJ) reconstruction as borrowing is mostly ruled out geographically. Kwékwlos (talk) 05:31, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
