Mistaken reconstruction?

[edit]

@Chuterix, lenition of medial /p/ happened some time after the split between Proto-Japanese (pre-OJP?) and Proto-Ryukyuan. Notice that other Proto-Ryukyuan terms have medial /p/, which appears in various daughter languages as /f/.

Moreover, the consistency between the various Ryukyuan forms of this term also points strongly towards a later borrowing from Japanese, not an inherited term. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 18:43, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

VwV is monophthongization. See PR *uwe (above) for example, from PJ *upay. Also PR *awo (blue), from PJ *awo. You can also ask @Kwékwlos.
I still have yet to find the Ryukyuan cognates. If it's amply attested, then it might be a Proto-Japonic term, not a borrowing from Classical Japanese. Chuterix (talk) 18:48, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Eirikr ^. Also I can't find cognate in Kikai (Kikai-Jima Hogen Shu), so I think this might be a borrowing, but attested everywhere. Chuterix (talk) 20:02, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
