"hole"

[edit]

@Eirikr: The meaning 'hole' also exists in Ryukyuan languages, so should we also say they're innovations as well? Chuterix (talk) 19:44, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

The basic meaning is "eye". English also has "eye" = "hole" as in "eye of a needle" or "eye of an axe-head", etc., similarly derived as an extension of the "eye" sense — but we don't list "hole" as a primary sense for the reconstructed etymon at Proto-Germanic *augô, even though this specific "hole" sense is shared by multiple descendants. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 22:41, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
