South Ryukyuan (Miyako) suggests /kukuru/?

[edit]

I note that Miyako's ffuz seems to indicate that the vowels after both /k/ consonants must have been /u/. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 17:14, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

What about PJ *tukoru? Chuterix (talk) 17:56, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Miyako tsïfūz suggests proto *tukuru. But then again, we see Kunigami shikōrun. This seems to be an outlier, and it contrasts oddly with Kunigami kukūrun for this term *kukuru. All other proto-Japonic terms we currently have that start with tu-, and that have Kunigami descendants listed in our entries, show that PJ tu- reflects in Kunigami as chi- -- with the exception of Proto-Japonic *tukoru → Kunigami shikōrun, and Proto-Japonic *tukuy → Kunigami hichū. For 作る, this leads me to wonder if the Kunigami might represent some additional innovation, or even replacement of the proto term with some other verb that had, or that developed, the same "to make" sense. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 19:14, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Northern Amami-Oshima makkuri

[edit]

This could conceivably come instead from maki + kuri. Are we certain that this is a compound that includes kukuri? ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 17:16, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
