Old Okinawan

[edit]

According to the 2021 source, the Ryukyuan words derive from *kura that went early contraction. Kwékwlos (talk) 12:37, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mistaken reconstruction

[edit]

The Ryukyuan /kwa/ reflex is cognate with Japanese 子等 (kora, child, children), amply attested in Old Japanese. This is analyzable as a compound of Old Japanese (⟨ko1, kwo) + (ra, pluralizing and genericizing suffix).

The Jlect entry for Okinawan kkwa even explicitly calls out this cognacy: https://www.jlect.com/entry/2824/kkwa/

We also see Japanese makura ("pillow") corresponding with Okinawan makkwa, demonstrating a similar shift in -kura-kkwa.

I have encountered no other sources reconstructing ku(w)a for Proto-Japonic.

This entry appears to be an error. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 21:04, 5 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Chuterix, thank you for your recent edit.
However, the problem persists -- the Proto-Japonic precursor of Old Japanese (ko1) cannot be any putative ku(r)a form, but rather simply ko or ku (depending on the reconstruction of the Proto precursor of OJP /o1/). The (r)a is from Old Japanese (-ra), a wholly separate morpheme.
There might well be grounds for reconstructing a Proto-Japonic term kura -- but in that case, this Proto term would be a precursor to Old Japanese 子等 (ko1ra), not (ko1). ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 05:18, 9 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have fixed the descendants list to point to OJP and JA 子等 instead. We will need a separate JPX-PRO entry for the ancestor to OJP / JA (ko₁). ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 19:51, 31 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
