Possibly mistaken reconstruction?
[edit]The simpler root *ank- could explain both modern forms あげる and あがる. Meanwhile, purported *ankayru derivation from *anka- cannot explain the existence of terminal / predicative form あぐ, nor attributive あぐる. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 06:40, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- As a belated aside, the shift from あぐ to あがる could be analyzed as a kind of passive / spontaneous conjugation of what may have been a transitive root verb あぐ.
- Meanwhile, the shift from あぐ to also-transitive あげる is less clear; very speculatively, I may see a kind of stative / resultative nuance that appears in the transitive -eru versions of also-transitive -u base verbs, as with つく ("to stick; to stab") and つける ("to stick, so that something stays stuck"). This would benefit from further exploration and analysis. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 19:36, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
