Derivation

[edit]

This is another problematic entry. The issue here is lemmatization -- -te as the conjunctive suffix is a conjugated form of completion auxiliary -tu. In Old and classical Japanese, this conjugates to the irrealis and adverbial -te, the terminal / predicative -tu (the lemma form), the adnominal -turu, the realis / perfective -ture, and the imperative -teyo. In Japanese, see also the entry in the KDJ here at Kotobank.

Any connection to Proto-Indo-European is speculative at best. See also notes at Reconstruction_talk:Proto-Japonic/ni#Derivation -- Japonic -te is from -tu, which in turn appears to be an ancient copular element paralleling -nu. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 04:35, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
