Impossible to get the Sabellic form from a PIt *denγwa protoform

[edit]

Unfortunately, it seems that de Vaan missed this in his dictionary, but the simplest way to motivate the f- of Osc fangvam, as well as the -g-, is to posit a metathesis of breathy-voicing from the *-gh- to the initial *d-, as seen by Ringe & Eska (2013:111), where a development PIE *dn̥ǵhwéh2- > *dn̥ghwā- --> *dhn̥gwā > fangvā-. The lemma form for this page is certainly whence the Latin form, but can't be posited as the ancestor of the Oscan forms without rigorous developmental acrobatics for this word.
