@Victar, JohnC5 Iranica Online gives ž in its reconstruction, but I'm inclined to ĵ. The ž seems out of place phonetically and the reflexes support ĵ. What do you think? —Aryamanarora (मुझसे बात करो) 23:53, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Aryamanarora: Cheung gives *i̯az "to worship" on pages 219-220, from *yeh₂ǵ- (“to honor”). In out system, this would render PII *yaĵnás > PIr *yaĵnás. —JohnC5 05:08, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
- @JohnC5: How are we accounting for the loss of the laryngeal in PII? Incidentally, it looks to be lacking in the Greek cognate as well. --Victar (talk) 15:59, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Victar: Not sure if it helps, but याज्ञ (yājña) is used in some Sanskrit compounds. Maybe the laryngeal was lost somewhere between PII and Old Indo-Iranian? —Aryamanarora (मुझसे बात करो) 18:02, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
