The Ringe citation is incorrect

[edit]

Ringe reconstructs this as an ablauting *a ~ *ā paradigm (Ringe 2017:15; see also Griepentrog 1995 w/ references, Rasmussen 1989:260), not as *neh2s-; I'm not sure why his book is used as a source for the latter... It should be noted that it can be considered a minority opinion that there were ablauting *a ~ *ā roots in PIE, but there are at least a few (good) scholars who believe in them, as the strict interpretation and application of the comparative method may require their existence for certain lemmata.

Griepentrog, W. (1995) Die Wurzelnomina des Germanischen und ihre Vorgeschichte. Innsbrucker Beiträge zur Sprachwissenschaft.

Rasmussen, J.E. (1989) Studien zur Morphophonemik der Indogermanischen Grundsprache Innsbrucker Beiträge zur Sprachwissenschaft.

Editing to add: who cited Pokorny as reconstructing *neh2s- lol?? He doesn't even reconstruct laryngeals... It's literally in the citation and whoever wrote it still didn't notice.
