Derivation?

[edit]

Per the etymology at Latin mel (honey), this is PIE *mel- (unexplained) + athematic suffix *-it (indicating a food).

If that is correct, what is this *mel- component? Is it Proto-Indo-European *melh₂- (to grind, to crush)? If so, does anyone postulate how such a sense arose? Honey cannot be ground. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 22:57, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
