Early Borrowing
[edit]Undoubtedly an early borrowing. Not quite sure if it is a borrowing languagemeal, or whether it has descended, but the possibility exists. Leasnam (talk) 14:20, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
- I suppose it depends on when the Germanic tribes were introduced to wine. In any case, we can be sure that the North Germanic people had no contact with the Romans, so if the word is Proto-Germanic in origin, then it would have to date back to the time when the Germanic people had spread south far enough, but not yet diversified into different languages. Proto-Germanic was probably a single dialect continuum at the time of borrowing. —CodeCat 19:30, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
