[edit]Taken along with Celtic *damniyos < *dm̥-n-, it's attractive to suppose the two forms go back to a collective *démōr, gen. *dm̥nés, "building (material)", parallel to collective *wédōr, *udnés, "water".
This at least fits better than what I assumed was a ra-stem noun derived from an earlier lost adjective **timraz, "building, fitting together", as ra-stem adjectives usually take the zero-grade, sometimes the o-grade, almost never the full-grade unless it's a secondary zero-grade, eg. *legraz.
