Or skuttōną

[edit]

Kroonen (2013: 451-452) explains this lemma as a zero-grade iterative of *skeutaną, rather than derived from the noun *skutą. If so, to be consistent with similar iteratives, it would be noted as *skuttōną.

Further, Kroonen suggests the original paradigm consisted of two stem variants, singular *skutt- against non-singular *skut-, and actually records the entry as *skut(t)ōn-.

Outside of Old Norse skotra (to shove) and Icelandic skota, Norwegian skota, skotta, I don't see him connecting this to the West Germanic descendants currently listed (am I missing something ?). Do the WGmc forms have a separate origin (from Proto-West Germanic *skot (shot) ?). Other than the Norwegian variant skotta (and possibly Old High German scozzōn), none of the descendants show a geminate. Leasnam (talk) 16:07, 14 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
