Kroonen doesn't explain the gemination in the Germanic root. It might be possible there was a nasal, *gʷerh₃-n- that would not have been assimilated in the present, but would have been in the non-singular preterite, giving *kwern-, *kurr-. The present could then have been leveled from the preterite. It's not an elegant solution, but seems like the only way to explain it. Anglom (talk) 03:35, 13 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

The gemination probably comes from the o-grade iterative, *kwarrōną, seen in Middle English quar (to fill up, choke up). Anglom (talk) 01:56, 4 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
