Kroonen 2009 has this as an ablauting n-stem, nom. *knūbô, gen. *knuppaz < PIE *gnéwbʰ-ō(n) ~ *gnubʰ-nós. This implies paradigm split, as with similar words identified by Kroonen.

This accounts for the geminate consonant.
