Possible etymology

[edit]

Kroonen suggests an etymology, building on Pokorny. Pokorny, Bd. 2, S. 547 suggests derivation of Holunder from PIE *kel-, which occurs in words for light and dark spots, or grey and blackish colour tones. Kroonen suggests a Pre-Gmc *kuln̥-tros from that base.
