The form is probably *fer- but could also be *firi-, as I think both would give Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂- (fair-). The latter form could be attested in Old High German firiwizzi, (OE fyrwet), I'm not really sure. I ended up going with the form *firi-, largely because of the correspondence of Old English fyrwit (< *firiwitą) Old High German firiwizzi (< *firiwitją) and Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (fairweitjan), which all point to a complex *firiwītaną, "to look over, look at attentively > be inquisitive".
