Are the Danish/Norwayish forms perhaps from the Middle Low German? Leasnam (talk) 00:47, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

It's possible. Maybe even the Old Norse term was a MLG or OS loan, but I don't know for sure. Koebler's dictionary doesn't say anything about a loan, and etymologiebank.nl doesn't mention the ON term at all. —CodeCat 00:56, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I guess it's fine where it is for now then. I was just curious how the -t would have become -de (I think the -t in the ON word is unusual anyway), but it could be due to levelling with the suffix in other words. Actually, ODS says that Danish dybde

"seems to have been newly formed from dyb ca. 1700, after words like højde, bredde etc.; even in the 18th century, it is rare in written language; dybhed was used previously"

Since this was during Denmark-Norway, the Norwegian term is presumably borrowed from, or at least influenced by, Danish.__Gamren (talk) 17:22, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
